What is Ethnic Media?

Ethnic media is media that is catered towards a specific minority group. The US Consensus Bureau predicts that by 2045, non-hispanic whites will be outnumbered by other minority groups in the population. The changing demographic of the United States, and other countries in the world has prompted the rise of ethnic media. Ethnic media plays a vital role in providing immigration, election, and other sensitive information to ethnic groups. Ethnic media differs from mainstream media because the intended audiences are specific groups within the population. Ethnic media provides local news about education, healthcare, and so on to better inform members of an ethnic group.

Ethnic media faces some of the same challenges as mainstream media. The biggest shared challenge is the issue of raising revenue. Because ethnic media is targeted towards specific minority groups, these newspapers are not able to raise money as quickly as mainstream news stations. Ethnic media outlets often times have issues landing big advertisements because companies do not want to work with outlets that have not been audited by official organizations that record their distribution and ratings. Owners of ethnic media outlets frequently work other jobs to provide funds for the ethnic media.

Ethnic media is vital to minority populations because it offers a different narrative from that of mainstream media. Mainstream news channels do not offer opinions or viewpoints from every minority group. This is problematic because ethnic groups that are not represented in mainstream media have now turned to ethnic media sources to get the news information they need. Ethnic media serves the interests of its people more than the mainstream news station. Ethnic media and mainstream media should not have to be divided in this manner, however that is the reality of the world we live in today.

With the rise of minority groups it will be interesting to see how mainstream and ethnic news changes in order to accommodate the growing and diverse populations.
