Biden Losing the Young Vote

 

Polls from the last year show support for Biden among young voters, ages 18-34, has dropped significantly. The largest decline comes from young people of color, which was a significant group that helped Biden win the presidency in 2020. The drop in support comes from the lack of completing campaign promises, like canceling student debt. This decline in support is problematic for democrats who already have slim majorities in the house and senate. Historically, Democrats perform better during general elections than midterm elections, so midterms can potentially change the balance of power in the house or senate. Another reason for the decline in support among young voters is the lack of action on progressive policies. After the Trump presidency, minority groups wanted to also have leaders who challenged the status quo and made effective change that would bring positive effects to minority groups. However, under the Biden presidency, progressive policies have not been embraced. House member AOC constantly criticizes Biden and other members of the House and Senate for not embracing progressive policies, and the the impact not embracing these policies while have on the party. 

Decline in support for Biden highlights the concerns of the Democratic Party. Without significant support from young groups and groups of color, Biden's reelection chances are considerably slimmer. Before his election Biden made many claims of what he would do in office, however since he has been in office, he has not delivered on his campaign promises. One of the Democratic Party's weaknesses is their ability to control and engage the people, and social media. With Biden's absence from social media platforms and his lack of action on progressive policies, voters are not inclined to elect him for another term. I am interested to see if Biden's political messaging changes over the next two years, and if he decides to embrace more progressive policies. I think if Democrats continue to play it safe then they will lose the presidency and control of the Senate and the House.
