Critical Race Theory
Earlier this year the Georgia Senate approved legislation that would ban discussion of critical race theory in grades K-12. The main concepts of critical race theory state that American institutions, laws, and such are inherently racist and affect different ethnic groups in different ways. This decision comes at a time when tensions between different ethnic groups in the United States are very much alive. Critical race theory should be taught in grade school if only to allow students to come to their own conclusions for themselves. Banning the discussion of critical race theory would also shield young adults from the facts that exist in American politics and systems. Historically, laws were used in the American political system to disenfranchise and diminish black and brown people, one example would be the Jim Crow Laws which approved the separation of whites from other non white minorities. It is easy to understate how much of an impact racism and racist mindsets impacted the politics of the United States. The founding fathers of America were individuals who owned slaves such as George Washington, Thomas Jefferson, and James Madison.
Critical race theory is not easy to discuss, but the facts of the concept can not be disputed. I think it is interesting that a majority Republican senate approved this measure when they are the benefactors of such a decision. I find it undemocratic to try and limit the knowledge surrounding our history and how minority groups have been treated in the past and still today. I think banning critical race theory in schools highlights the issues that are still relevant today and how policies benefit one ethnicity group more than others.
